Lyrics:

Have you seen the well-to-do?
Upon Lennox Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare
With their noses in the air

High hats and coloured collars
White spats and fifteen dollars
Spending every dime on a wonderful time

If you’re blue and you don’t know where to go to
Why don’t you go where Harlem flits

Puttin’ on the Ritz

Spangled gowns upon the bevy of high browns
Down the levy all misfits

Put-tin’ on the Ritz

That’s where each and every lulu-belle goes
Every Thursday evening with her swell beaus
rubbin’ elbows.

Come with me and we’ll attend their jubilee and
See them spend their last two bits

Puttin’ on the Ritz

Have you seen the well-to-do?
Upon Lennox Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare
With their noses in the air

High hats and coloured collars
White spats and fifteen dollars
Spending every dime for a wonderful time

If you’re blue and you don’t know where to go to
Why don’t you go where fashion sits

Put-tin’ on the Ritz

Spangled gowns upon the bevy of high browns
From down the levy all misfits

Puttin’ on the Ritz

That’s where each and every lulu-belle goes
Every Thursday evening with her swell beaus
Rubbin’ elbows

Come with me and we’ll attend their jubilee and See them spend their last two bits

Puttin’ on the Ritz

His voice is perfect for this type of signing

I wonder if Robbie knows what he's singing about? This version of the song (the original) is about going to amuse oneself by watching poor black people spend all their money trying to be something that most people thought they were not: important and cultured. A few examples: "High browns" - referred to light-skinned black people who were thought to be behaving above their station as a black person; "That's where each and every Lulu-belle goes" -  a stereotypical name for black women/black maids, since most blacks were from the Deep South and many had the double-barreled first names that are common there; "Every Thursday evening" - referred to maids' (most of whom were black) traditional day off; "From down the levee" - another reference to black people's origin in the Deep South. There's a reason why the other version is the most widely-used. Just saying.

Thank you +Anya W for that insight.

+BLUESLASH13 Perhaps I'm more conscious of things like this because I'm actually black myself and my 2nd great grandmother *was* actually a maid named Lulu-Belle, lol. She was from Tennessee (her parents were slaves) and moved north to New York when she was in her 30s in the early 1920s. She would've been the exact type of person this song is about.
Anya W 17 марта 2014 года в 14:21
+BLUESLASH13 I'm sure he's only singing it because it's an iconic, vintage song. I was simply suggesting that, as he's not American, he may not be familiar with the issues/terms he's singing about (like "high browns from down the levee") and may not know that there's a very good reason why this version has fallen out of use. While I have to admit to liking the old style and sound of the original (Fred Astair's first version) myself, I also believe that just because something is vintage/original, doesn't mean it's worth glamorizing and recreating. And yes, there is plenty of disgusting music out there today, but do we want that music glamorized/recreated 60 years later? I hope not. In the same way that many people don't consider today's music offensive, people didn't find *this* song offensive when it was first made, since it was the norm to mistreat and ridicule black people. With hindsight, most of us now know better, which was why I was a bit surprised to find a modern, well-known artist singing this version of the song.

I will never be able to listen to this song in the same way again...

lfarfel 09 января 2018 года в 02:20 1
these lyrics were WAY too RACIST for 1930s. and it was the reason they were changed. but i guess they are fine for Mr Williams. interesting.... shame on him
Macey Harper 25 сентября 2018 года в 00:31
lfarfel Can you answer how it was racist? I honestly don’t know. I would like to know though.

adriciscute3 20 декабря 2013 года в 14:24 7
I was excited to hear him do this, love his swing covers. However he chose to cover the original version... historically this is the racist version so I was annoyed he chose THIS version over the more common one. Ignoring that, its a good cover! Its just a shame I know too much about this song...
Paul Bundy 29 января 2018 года в 02:29
Leave it to a Russian Jewish immigrant to write a song satirizing wealthy White Anglo-Saxons who would laugh at impoverished African Americans from Harlem, which is where the song is set.
WereWeed 19 октября 2017 года в 03:37
Wasn't this version also more of a satire than simple direct racism as well? Like it was more aimed at the high class white who spend their time and money laughing at the poor who are simply trying to emulate a high life they can never achieve?
Typical Lib 03 октября 2017 года в 20:09
Tacoma version everyone covers has literal blackface, and you call this the racist version?
Angela Friedemann 15 июня 2017 года в 23:11
Why do you think this is a racist version? I didn't hear one offending word...
And why should someone want to do a cover version of a cover version?
Caocao8888 04 января 2017 года в 14:17
Smart? Certainly you're joking...
Molly Fairhurst 07 ноября 2014 года в 21:57 1
I liked this but I felt it was not "brassy" enough for this song. I'm doing this in music looking at females of classic swing and I feel like this isn't as good as the original

Shouldn't it be park avenue?
Bunny (∞) 24 июня 2016 года в 18:58
The original lyrics (Irving Berlin, 1929) cite Lenox Avenue. The song is particularly well-associated with Fred Astaire who recorded two versions, one in 1930 which uses the same lyrics and the second, more well-known version in 1946 for the film _Blue Skies_, for which Berlin revised the lyrics to refer to Park Avenue.
Bob Wells 23 июня 2017 года в 22:24 0
