For me Punk (and Hardcore Punk in particular) was always about community, about giving a voice to the dispossessed: the so-called freaks (people into fringe or horror stuff), and homosexuals, and women, and black people, and poor whites; any marginalised that likes the sound should be welcome to be a part of the movement. So, to me, to shut-down any group is to be a "bad punk".

Bands like MDC and Dead Kennedys and Black Flag and T.S.O.L. (among others), seemed, for me, to represent a quest for the acceptance (even intellectually) within the movement, unorganised as it was, of these marginalised people.

But all that is my opinion and I know some who think that it's all about the sound and energy and nothing more; not that there's anything wrong with that.

Eh... except for their (Bad Brains') late homophobia; not very "Punk" is it? Anyway, from The Germs to The Damned is very difficult to say in which country (let alone a specific band) was truly originated the Hardcore Punk subgenre.
